As a personal side project, I’m challenging myself to redesign the visual identities of stores, restaurants, and products, transforming them with a fresh, modern look. A brand’s visual identity is its first impression and a key factor in building future recognition. This project allows me to dive into emerging design trends, push creative boundaries, and help businesses leave a lasting impact on their audience. Project Overview - Sugar Bowl / 2023
Sugar Bowl is an iconic restaurant located on the Millersville University campus. Since opening in 1978, it has expanded to two locations in the Lancaster area, serving pizza, subs, and their famous "world's greatest strombolis." Although my college dining experience rarely involved Sugar Bowl (I mainly stuck to my prepaid meal plan), my mother, a 1987 Millersville alumna, fondly recalls late-night stromboli runs.
In the campus design community, however, Sugar Bowl was known for its rather peculiar website. During a college group project on website navigation and UI/UX design, we were tasked with redesigning the Sugar Bowl site. The original site, with its saturated colors, whimsical fonts, and confusing navigation, created an overwhelming user experience. Working in small groups, we restructured the content into wireframes, enhancing the design while maintaining the essence of Sugar Bowl.
Now, as a Millersville alum myself, I decided to revisit Sugar Bowl as part of my next redesign challenge. Building on what I learned during that initial project, I created a Figma prototype. The prototype walks through the process of ordering a large, regular stromboli at the Millersville location. Project Overview - Bethesda Bagels / 2023
Bethesda Bagels is a family-owned restaurant chain with locations across the D.C., Maryland, and Virginia area. Since the 1980s, they have been serving handcrafted bagels and homemade cream cheeses, priding themselves on their community involvement. After hearing rave reviews from my Deloitte coworkers about their everything bagels and tofu cream cheese, I visited their Rosslyn, VA location. The line stretching out the door was a testament to the local love for these bagels.
While their bagels are indeed delicious, my design-focused mind couldn’t stop fixating on the “super bagel”—a complex, muscular logo that didn’t quite fit. Despite not finding the origins of the superhero theme, I decided to lean into it, reimagining their brand with a bold, bright, and comic-inspired look. Since Bethesda Bagels primarily focuses on to-go items and catering, my mockups emphasize advertising for their store locations and highlight their signature products.
